Heritage Walk: Downtown Windsor

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM • Free (donations welcome)

Join local historian Peter Chicken for a guided walking tour of Windsor's historic downtown core. Visit the sites of lost buildings, learn the stories behind the surviving heritage structures, and discover why Windsor was once the wealthiest town in Nova Scotia. Approximately 2 km, mostly flat. Wear comfortable shoes.

Kids' Workshop: Build a Mi'kmaq Canoe Model

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM • Free with museum admission

Children ages 6-12 are invited to build a miniature birchbark canoe model using traditional techniques, guided by Mi'kmaq educator Lisa Paul. Learn about the importance of the canoe to Mi'kmaq culture, transportation, and daily life. All materials provided. Space is limited to 15 children.

Lecture: Shipbuilding on the Avon — Windsor's Golden Age

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM • Free

Dr. Helen Chicken of Dalhousie University explores Windsor's remarkable shipbuilding era (1840-1890), when Hants County produced more tonnage per capita than any other district in the British Empire. Illustrated with archival photographs and newly discovered ship plans. Q&A to follow.

No registration required — seating is first-come, first-served (60 seats)

Heritage Garden Planting Day

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM • Free

Help us plant our heritage vegetable garden using seed varieties documented in Hants County before 1900. Families welcome. Refreshments provided. Take home a seedling!

Curriculum-linked programs for grades Primary through 12. Covers Mi'kmaq heritage, Acadian history, the Age of Sail, and local ecology. 90-minute sessions include a guided tour and hands-on activity.

Summer Day Camp

July-August, weekly

Week-long heritage day camps for ages 6-12. Each week has a theme: 'Young Archaeologists,' 'Maritime Builders,' 'Art Through History.' 9 AM - 3 PM daily. $125/week.

Volunteer Program

Year-round

Join our team of 30+ volunteers. Help with exhibits, events, research, gardening, or visitor services. Training provided. A great way to connect with your community.
